Banned in 1973, DDT is Still A Problem

DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) is an insecticide originally used against mosquitoes, DDT was banned in the United States in 1973 but it is still classified as a probable human cancer-causing agent. DDE is a chemical that results from the breakdown of DDT. DDE has been found in people even though they were born years after the DDT ban went into effect. Also, serum blood levels of DDE have been found to be three times higher among Hispanics than among non-Hispanic whites or blacks. DDT exposure continues to occur because of its persistence in the environment or in food, according to the CDC (Center for Disease Control) .
