Fishing Link

District of Columbia Advisory Page

FishingLink.Org was established to foster the distribution and exchange of information between governmental institutions, educational organizations, businesses and individuals having interest in the edibility of aquatic resources. This site, administered by FishingLink, Inc., is developing into a successful joint venture to effectively meet that goal. Through FishingLink, Inc, those entities will be provided timely information aiding in the process of making informed decisions. Decisions to help protect interests pertaining to the edibility of aquatic organisms.

Points of interest

The District of Columbia Department of Health advises the general public to limit consumption of fish from all DC waters, as follows:

  • Do not eat: Catfish, carp, or eel.
  • May eat: One-half pound per month of largemouth bass, or one-half pound per week of sunfish or other fish.
  • Choose to eat: Younger and smaller fish of legal size.
  • The practice of catch and release is encouraged.

Always skin the fish, trim away fat, and cook fish to drain away fat because chemical contaminants tend to concentrate in the fat of the fish.

District of Columbia Fishing Advisories and Public Announcements

There are no fish advisories for mercury found for the District Of Columbia proper.

The Chesapeake Bay Program has a great site for staying up on Bay issues including advisories.
