Arkansas Fishing Advisories and Public Announcements

Arkansas Department of Health says;
"The Plain Truth about Mercury and Eating Fish Some people joke about mercury and pretend the problem doesn't exist. The truth is mercury is with us to stay and can have harmful effects on human health. Efforts are underway to understand the way mercury finds its way into fish in some rivers and lakes. In the meantime, there are some things you can do to reduce your chances of health effects from eating fish with mercury. Mercury builds up in the food chain and in you, too! One of the best ways to avoid mercury is to eat fish which don’t mainly eat other fish. If you can, eat bream and crappie instead of bass and flathead catfish, since these panfish eat lots of other things besides fish, and generally have less mercury in them. When fishing in lakes or rivers with mercury advisories, eat the smaller fish. Being younger, they will have less mercury than older, bigger fish of the same type. As noted in the following pages, health advisories have been issued suggesting that the intake of some fish from certain waters be limited because of contamination by mercury, dioxin or PCBs. For additional information, contact the Arkansas Department of Health at 1-800-235-0002."
